How do I find out if someone has a car insurance policy?

Can I look up someone else's insurance information somehow? Someone hit my car, then they drove off before I got their information. I'm worried that they don't have insurance or something.

To find out if someone has a car insurance policy, you can contact the DMV
You’ll need to provide:
  • The driver’s license plate number
  • Your contact information
  • The reason for your request
You can also talk to the police about the incident. Again, if you have the other driver’s license plate number, you should provide that information and let them know you were the victim of a
hit and run
.
Pro tip: If you’re unable to locate the driver or find out if they have insurance, you may still be covered if your policy includes
uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage
. Otherwise, you’ll be on your own to pay for
repairs
