How do I find out if a car has insurance?

I was recently in an accident. I was rear ended, but the car sped off. I got the license plate number and filed a police report. Although the police are investigating, I'd still like to find out if the car has insurance. How could I find that out?

Sorry to hear about your accident! Accidents are already awful enough without having to worry about a driver speeding off. But breathe easy! These steps should help.
While the police are your best option for determining whether the other car has
car insurance
, you can also contact your local DMV. Almost every state has a
minimum insurance requirement
, so the DMV typically keeps a record of insurance policies.
If you can’t find the other driver’s insurance, inform your coverage provider. Many policies cover hit-and-run accidents through
uninsured motorist coverage
or
collision coverage
.
Once you repair the car and settle your claim, consider looking into other car insurance policies. Even if you like your current company, insurance rates can change after an accident or a claim. Shopping around ensures you always get the best rate, even with an accident on your record.
