How do I find my old car with the VIN number?

What’s the best way to find an old car using the VIN number? My dad and I fixed up this old convertible together a few years ago. He recently passed away, and I’d like to buy back the car in his memory.

What a great way to honor your father! While tracking down old cars can be difficult when you don’t have the proper information, you can easily use a VIN to find your old car.
Websites like Vinpit,
CARFAX
, and Autocheck offer VIN decoder services online. All you need to do is input your VIN, and these websites will tell you a range of information, like:
  • The service history,
  • damage reports,
  • current owners, and
  • last known location.
From there, you can contact the owners and see if they’re willing to sell. Unfortunately, VIN decoders aren’t free. You’ll likely be charged a one-time fee of between $15 and $30—depending on the information you’d like to receive.
To help offset the price of your VIN decoder, start saving on car insurance with
Jerry
. A licensed broker, the Jerry app can help you compare personalized quotes from over 50 top providers like Progressive and Allstate. When you find a better rate, Jerry can help you switch policies and even help cancel your old one!
