How do I file a claim with renters insurance?

Last night, we had a fire in our townhouse. Thankfully, we all got out OK, and the damage was limited to a section of the family room. What do I do next in terms of filing a claim with my renters insurance?

Knowing your family got out safely is a blessing and truly something to be grateful for. But now you have to begin the process of assessing the damage and
filing a claim
.
Here are some basic steps you should take when filing a renters insurance claim:
  • Get in touch with your landlord if you haven’t already. In addition to being the person responsible for repairing the damage, they’ll need to get in touch with their insurer as well.
  • Make sure you secure copies of police and/or fire reports. If it hasn’t already been, the cause of the fire will need to be identified.
  • Create an inventory of the items that were damaged or destroyed. If it’s safe to do so, take photographs of the damage.
  • Call your insurer and follow their instructions for filing a claim.
  • Arrange a meeting with the insurance adjuster.
