How do I file a claim on another party's car insurance?

A car swiped my passenger side doors while I was driving home from work. They left a huge streak down the side of my car, so I need to file a claim—but I don’t really know how to. What steps do I need to take to file a claim on another party’s car insurance?

While it might sound tricky, filing a claim on another party’s insurance is the same as filing any other type of claim. Since the providers work together to determine fault, you won’t actually need to contact the other driver’s insurance at all! Instead, you should follow these steps to file a claim on another party’s car insurance:
  • Contact your provider and tell them about the situation. Describe the circumstances, and give them as much information as you can about the other driver. At the very least, tell them the other driver’s name, phone number, and license plate number.
  • File a police report at your local station to officially document the event. If the claim drags out or goes to court, you can use your police report as evidence in the proceedings.
  • Speak with your
    adjuster
about the damage. They may come to inspect the car, ask you to send pictures of the damage, or have you bring your vehicle to a repair shop for an estimate.
  • Wait for an update from your provider. If they decide the other driver is at fault, they’ll send you a check or pay for the mechanic to cover repairs.
Remember, your insurance rate may increase after you file a claim—whether or not you’re at fault. Before filing a claim, consider if the cost of repairs justifies the increased premium.
