How do I file a claim against the other driver's insurance?
If I were to get into an accident, how would I file a claim against the other driver's insurance? I removed collision coverage from my policy, so I know my insurance wouldn't cover any damage to my car.
It’s good to plan ahead for any driving-related emergency. If you are in an accident and the other driver is at-fault, you can submit a claim to their insurance company.
When an accident occurs, the first thing you will want to do (after making sure you and the other driver are okay) is to call the police to set up a police report. While you are waiting for them to arrive, collect as much information as you can at the scene of the accident. Try to obtain the following:
- Their name and address
- Their insurance company and policy number
- Their year, make, and model
- Their driver’s license and plate number
- Pictures of the scene
- Contact information from witnesses
Once everything at the scene is settled, you can contact the other driver’s car insurance company and file a report. You must then contact your insurance company to inform them of the incident, regardless of who’s at-fault.
Since you have liability-only coverage, your insurance company will not be making a payout on your policy. If the other driver is deemed at-fault, their insurance company will pay for your car repairs from their property damage coverage.
