How do I disconnect the battery from a Chevy Volt?

I’ll be doing some minor work on my Chevy Volt and want to be safe by disconnecting the batteries first. I’ve only ever disconnected batteries in regular gasoline cars. How would I disconnect the battery in my Chevy Volt?

Smart thinking to disconnect the batteries before working on your hybrid! Disconnecting both the 12 volt and high voltage batteries in the Volt is straightforward, but accessing the batteries involves a few steps. Here’s how to disconnect a
Chevy Volt
battery.
First, make sure the car is off and then unhook the 12-volt battery:
  • Remove the
    trunk lining
and plastic tray to reveal the 12v battery. You may require a drill to remove the bolts from the tray.
  • Use a wrench to remove the negative cable from the battery
Next, disconnect the high voltage battery:
  • Put on insulated rubber gloves.
  • **Lift the armrest **between the front seats and remove the lining to reveal the orange battery disconnect.
  • If you see a round orange plug, turn once counter-clockwise, pull up, turn counter-clockwise again, then pull up again to remove.
  • If you see a more rectangular orange nub, push down the release tab and pull up on the orange battery disconnect.
If you try to start the car after removing the high voltage battery, this could cause issues with the car’s internal computer and prevent it from starting. This is why it’s important to disconnect the 12-volt battery first as a precaution.
While working on your car, consider whether your
car insurance
could use some maintenance.
