How do I connect to a Ford Explorer’s Bluetooth?

I’m doing a favor for my mom who just bought an SUV online. I’m going to fly down to North Carolina and drive it back for her. Could you tell me how to connect to a Ford Explorer’s Bluetooth before I go?

Connecting to the Bluetooth in a Ford Explorer is easy. Here’s how to do it:
  • Make sure your phone has Bluetooth enabled
  • Press the phone icon on the infotainment screen. In some older models you might find a phone button on the dashboard instead
  • Press Add Phone
  • The car’s screen may ask you if you want to pair a device. If it does, press “OK”
  • On your phone, find the car in your list of Bluetooth devices. It will typically display as SYNC or Ford SYNC. Press that to connect
  • You’ll now see a pin number on the infotainment screen. On your phone, you’ll be prompted to verify that pin number or, if you have an older phone, you’ll need to type it in. Do this and your phone should now be paired with the car
Some Android phones won’t ask you to confirm the pin at all. That’s okay. You should be connected and there won’t be any additional steps.
Bluetooth became optional in all Ford Explorers starting with model year 2008. So depending on what trim level your mom’s Explorer is, there’s a good chance she’ll have Bluetooth. Model year 2017 introduced Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality as well.
Depending on what year your mom’s Ford Explorer is, you might be able to use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, which is as simple as connecting to the car with a USB cable. It has the added benefit of also providing you with GPS and other hands-free features. It’s something to consider if it’s an option.
We hope your mom enjoys her new Ford Explorer, and we hope you have a safe and pleasant drive up the East Coast.
