How do I check whether a car is insured or not?

Can I check whether someone’s car is insured if they didn’t stop to trade information? Someone hit my car in the parking lot the other day and drove off. Luckily I am fine, but my car is not.

“After you’ve
recovered
from the initial shock of your accident, there are a few places you can check to see if the other car is insured.
  • Your local police department can provide you with the other driver’s insurance information if you have a legitimate reason for asking, like an accident. You’ll just need to give them the other driver’s license plate number and help the assisting officer to complete an incident report.
  • You can also contact your local DMV for the other driver’s insurance information. They will require a verifiably legitimate reason for your request, as insurance information is protected under privacy laws. You’ll want to give them clear, accurate information about the accident and up-to-date contact information to make sure they approve your request.
However, you could just file a claim directly with your insurance company. If you give them the other driver’s license plate number, the claims department will run the plates and contact the other person’s insurer. This is probably your easiest option and it’s what you pay your provider to do!
If your provider says they can’t help you, then it may be time for a change. Try using
