How do I check to see if a car has no insurance?

Someone swiped the side of my car in the parking lot the other day. How can I find out if they have insurance or not? They didn't leave any information, but I did take down their license plate.

“Driver information is protected under privacy laws, but if you were involved in a collision, you can find the other driver’s insurance information in a couple of different ways.
In the case of a
collision
, you can ask the police if the other person has car insurance. You’ll need to provide an incident report to do it. So it’s good you got the license plate number; that’s what police will need to find the information for you.
If you’d rather not go to the police, you can contact your local DMV instead. You’ll have to provide your contact information and the reason for your request (i.e., describe the accident). If the DMV is unable to verify the information you provide, they may deny your request. So make sure the account you give is accurate.
