How do I check my catalytic converter with a scan tool?

I’ve noticed plumes of darker exhaust smoke in my rearview when I accelerate, and I think there could be an issue going on with my car’s catalytic converter. I don’t want to waste money on a mechanic if I don’t have to, so I’m wondering how I can check my catalytic converter at home with a scan tool?

You can easily check your catalytic converter with a scan tool—just follow these steps:
  • Start by plugging your scan tool into your car’s OBD-II port (usually located on the left side of your steering wheel)
  • Once your scan tool is connected, start your engine and let your vehicle run for 10 to 15 minutes
  • Check your scan tool. The diagnostic code for a damaged catalytic converter is P0420. If your scan tool displays this code, there’s something wrong with your cat-con!
If you’re interested in taking it a step further, you can navigate to the live data option on your scan tool and check your O2 (oxygen) sensor’s readings—large fluctuations in your car’s O2 output point to problems with your catalytic converter.
