How do I check if my car has a warranty?

How do I know if my car is still under warranty? I just bought a car from a private seller. He said the warranty was transferable but I'm not so sure.

“Good news—car warranties are usually tied to the vehicle identification number (VIN) and therefore are transferable. If you have the VIN handy, you can call your local dealership to see if your car is still
covered
.
If that doesn’t work, you can look up your
Carfax report
, which should show whether the vehicle is covered by a warranty or not.
