How do I check if I have car insurance on my car?

How do I check if my car has car insurance? I just recently got a divorce and I’m not sure if I still have insurance since we were on the same policy.

I’m sorry to hear about your divorce, but one less thing you have to worry about is your insurance. Your insurance provider will not make changes to your policy unless all parties are informed.
But, there are still a few steps you should take if you moved out of your former home in light of the divorce:
  • Remember to update each vehicle’s new garaging address on your policy.
  • If your financial status changed, update your insurance to reflect that, as well.
  • Make sure to get renters or homeowners insurance for your new place. Here’s why I bring this up: If your car is broken into and possessions are stolen from your vehicle, it will be covered under your renters or homeowners insurance—not your car insurance.
If you’re still uncertain about your current coverage, then you should contact your provider. When doing so, make sure to have the following information on hand:
  • Driver’s license number
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN)
  • License plate number
You could also try calling your local DMV or secretary of state. Both tend to keep records of insured vehicles, depending on where you live.
If you end up shopping for your own policy, the Jerry app can help you find better, cheaper coverage for you and your vehicle. A licensed broker that offers end-to-end support, the Jerry app gathers affordable quotes, helps you switch plans, and will even assist in canceling your old policy.
