How do I check car insurance policy details?

I was watching the news and saw that where I live, 15% of the drivers are uninsured. How do I check my car insurance policy to see if I’m protected against an uninsured driver?

Unfortunately, almost every state struggles with uninsured drivers, despite heavy penalties in play for driving without insurance. What you’re going to want to check your policy for is
uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
(sometimes abbreviated UM/UIM).
First, find your
insurance policy number
on your insurance card (which might be a pdf or a physical card). Then, check your policy details by logging in online, opening your insurance provider’s app, or calling an agent.
If you don’t have uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, it’s a great idea to add this to your policy. This coverage will kick in if you get in an accident with a driver who lacks coverage to pay for your damages (unless you’re at-fault).
