How do I charge a Nissan car key?

My key fob isn’t unlocking my car consistently and seems to be low on power. I’d like to give it some more juice, but I don’t know how! What’s the best way to charge a Nissan car key?

A well-functioning key fob is a simple luxury that can make the entire car-ownership experience more enjoyable! That said, Nissan key fobs cannot be recharged. Instead, you’ll need to replace the battery.
Nissan key fobs generally use CR2025 button cell batteries, which you can purchase from a dealer or retail store for around $5. But before you buy a new battery, check your owner manual to make sure you’re getting the right model.
Once you have the right replacement, follow these steps to replace the battery:
  • Pull out the spare metal key inside your fob. This can be released with a small slider on the back of your key.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pop open the plastic casing by inserting it where the key was and twisting.
  • Use the screwdriver to pop the dead battery out of its compartment.
  • Insert the fresh battery with the negative side facing you.
  • Replace the housing and spare key.
Just like that, you’ve replaced your key fob battery! If you’re still having trouble, contact your Nissan dealer and have them reprogram your key.
