How do I change the ignition lock cylinder on a Ford Focus?

The key in my Ford Focus doesn’t move smoothly when I put it into the ignition. So before I get stranded somewhere, I want to replace the cylinder. What do I need to do to change the ignition lock cylinder on my Ford Focus?

If you have a problem with your ignition, replacing the ignition lock cylinder on your Focus can often fix the issue. While it might seem like an intimidating process, you’ll only need a nut driver, Allen wrench, and a screwdriver. From there, you can follow these steps to change the ignition lock cylinder in your Ford Focus:
  • Remove the plastic panel below your steering wheel by taking out the screws.
  • Take out the bottom column cover by taking off the bolts
  • Push down on the plastic tabs on each side of the steering wheel column to remove the lower half of the plastic panel.
  • Place your key in the ignition and turn it to accessory.
  • Turn the wheels 90 degrees to the right from their normal position.
  • Look for a small hole in the ignition switch.
  • Place the Allen wrench inside and, once you have some traction with the wrench, wiggle the ignition with the key.
  • After some finagling, the cylinder should pop out!
Ignition lock cylinders can wear out over time, so try not to worry! It’s not too big a deal. That said, you can help your cylinder last longer by keeping heavy objects off your keychain in the future.
