Occasionally, a key fob will reach the end of its lifetime and need a replacement, but before replacing the whole fob, you should definitely change the battery and see if that solves your problems.
If your Prius was built between 2004 and 2009, it has a second-generation key fob that uses a standard 2032 battery and will require a small screwdriver or nail file to replace the key fob battery. To replace the battery, unscrew the battery compartment on the back, replace the battery, and reassemble the key. After this, you should be good to go!
If your Prius was built in 2010 or later, it has a different key fob that uses a Panasonic 1632 battery, and you will not need any additional tools.
To replace the battery, you first need to remove the mechanical key by pulling the switch next to the keyring and then pulling up on the keyring to remove the key. Next, insert the mechanical key into the shallow slot next to the key holder and twist. If done correctly, the entire key fob will separate down the middle, revealing the battery. Finally, replace the battery and reassemble the key fob.
If replacing the battery does not solve your key fob problems, it may be time to order a new one or ask an expert. Many aspects of car ownership should be left to the professionals, including your
