The process to change the battery in your car remote (aka key fob) will vary depending on the type of remote you have.
In general, however, you can follow these steps:
Open your remote. Usually, there is a very small latch, divot, gap, or sliding mechanism to open up your key fob. It isn’t always obvious, so don’t feel bad if it takes you some time to find it. Your owner’s manual will likely have specific instructions.
Figure out which battery type you need. Once you’ve opened the remote, you should see the battery. It will usually be flat, round, and silver. Look for a code or markings etched on the battery that indicate the type.
Purchase a new battery. You can find car remote batteries online or at the grocery store, pharmacy, or nearest big-box store.
Replace the battery. Slide the new battery into place in the same fashion that the old battery was inserted. Close the casing, then test the remote.
If you replace the battery and find that your remote is still not functioning properly, you may need a replacement fob. You’ll need to get in touch with an auto locksmith or car dealership to get one. I’m sad to report, new car remotes are pretty expensive.
