How do I change my car insurance when moving out of state?

I'm moving to Georgia from Texas for work, and there’s been so much to keep track of that I haven’t even thought about my car insurance. What happens to my car insurance if I move to another state?

You’ll need to contact your
car insurance company
to change your insurance when you move out of state. Some insurance companies don’t operate in every state—so you’ll also want to be sure they will provide insurance in Georgia.
Additionally, since every state has different
minimum car insurance requirements
, you may need to adjust your coverage when you move. Here’s what to do:
  • Call your company or agent: Get in contact with your insurance company to provide them with your new address. Once you’ve updated your address, your company will quote you on the cost of a new policy that includes Georgia’s minimum coverage.
  • Shop around: If you’re unhappy with your new rate—or if your provider doesn’t operate in Georgia—you should shop around for quotes with other companies. Since Georgia requires
    proof of insurance
before you can register your vehicle in-state, you’ll need to find a provider as soon as possible.
Once you’ve found a company and rate you’re happy with, you can move forward with registering your vehicle with the Georgia Motor Vehicle Department.
