How do I cancel my old car insurance?

I just purchased a new car insurance policy before my current one expires. I know my old policy auto-renews and I want to cancel it before I get charged for the first month. How can I cancel my old insurance policy?

“Canceling an old car insurance policy varies by company, but a good place to start is by checking online or giving them a call.
You can usually find an insurance company’s phone number on your policy’s
declaration page
or insurance card. Occasionally, an insurance company will allow the entire process to be done online or require the cancellation to be in writing, so it is best to ask them directly.
When canceling your policy, be sure to ask about any cancellation fees to avoid a surprise charge. Not every insurer has a cancellation fee, and they are more common when canceling a policy mid-term, but it is worth asking about.
Also, it is great you purchased a policy before your current one expires to avoid a
lapse in coverage
, but you should still shop around and compare quotes from multiple companies to ensure you are getting the best deal.
If you’d rather leave the hard work of gathering quotes to someone else, use
