How do I buy totalled cars from insurance companies?

I'm on the search for a new weekend project, and I thought it would be fun to fix up a totalled car. I’m just not sure where to start! How can I buy totalled cars from insurance companies?

owned by insurance companies usually cannot be purchased directly, but you can easily find them at auto auctions!
Auto auctions are a place to buy salvaged, abandoned, impounded or repossessed vehicles. These auctions are run by companies that purchase these cars to resell to consumers or other corporations, and can be attended in person or online.
To find an auto auction near you, check your local junkyard, newspaper, or look around online.
