- Verify that the seller is the actual owner of the car by matching their ID with the title.
- Request the title or title record with the Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles to verify that the title matches the VIN.
- Inspect the vehicle. Taking it to a trusted mechanic can often make this process easier.
- Take the car for a test drive to make sure you like it.
- Ask the seller for repair records and ask about anything wrong with the car. You should also ask why they’re selling the vehicle.
- Order a Carfax report to make sure that the vehicle hasn’t been in an accident and that it’s mechanically sound.
- Verify the odometer reading.
- Be wary of sellers that are high-pressure or elusive about answering questions. If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.
- Make sure the car doesn’t have a lien on it.
- Pay the seller and transfer the title.
