Preparation is always best. There are a few ways you can break your car window in an emergency:
  • Your headrest. You can use the metal prongs that connect your headrest to your seat to smash through the glass of your window. Aim for a weak point of the window, like where the door panel meets the glass pane. Jam the metal prong into this space and pull it back sharply towards you.
  • Emergency tool. You can pick up a tool specifically designed to break through car glass and cut seatbelts. Your local auto parts store or Amazon often carries these for under $20. They feature a small pointed metal head that works to break through the glass.
  • A heavy object will also work to break the glass. Consider a metal water bottle or even your smartphone to repeatedly bang against a weak point on the glass until it shatters.
If all else fails, you can try to use your legs or elbow. That said, these should be your last resort. You can injure yourself when breaking a window with your elbow or legs, so try using other methods or tools before choosing this option.
