How do I add power windows to a car?

I’ve been driving a 2001 GMC Sonoma for a while now. I love this truck, but I would like to modernize it starting with the crank windows. How do you add power windows to a car?

They truly don’t make trucks like the classic 2001
GMC Sonoma
anymore! It makes sense that you’d want to update your classic truck with some minor modern upgrades, but you should find a body shop that specializes in these kinds of upgrades.
This is not a job for a novice or hobbyist. Upgrading to power windows involves a lot of rewiring and cutting the door to make room for the new parts. Here are some questions to ask yourself before deciding to convert your manual windows to power windows:
  • How much longer am I going to drive this vehicle? Most power window upgrades will only last two to three years with regular use or five years with minimal use.
  • Is this worth the cost? It may be more economical to buy a modern vehicle than it is to retrofit power windows onto vehicles with manual windows.
  • Am I okay with aftermarket parts? Chances are, you won’t be able to find original equipment manufactured parts for your vehicle anymore.
