How do I add flood insurance to my insurance policy?

How do I get flood insurance? I live in an area that's seen flooding more and more frequently in the last few years, and it's making me nervous about my home. I want to go ahead and add flood insurance to my insurance policy, but I've never had to do this before and I'm not sure where to start.

“Adding
flood insurance
to your policy doesn’t have to be difficult. You can get flood insurance one of two ways: through a federal policy or a private policy.
  • Federal policies, which are issued through licensed providers and agents under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), tend to set one rate for your area, based on its risk level.
  • Private policies, on the other hand, are issued through private insurers, which might provide a better deal for the area you live in or more coverage than a federal policy. For example, federal policies do not cover additional living expenses (like hotel stays) while your home is being repaired; some private policies do.
If you want to add flood insurance to your current policy, the first thing you should do is contact your insurance provider. They’ll have the best information on whether or not they offer flood insurance, how much it will cost, and which type of flood insurance will be best for you to add on to your existing plan.
Sadly, a lot of folks are dealing with the reality that flooding has become much more common in the last five years. But fortunately, it’s never been easier to shop around with multiple insurance companies for appropriate coverage.
