How do car insurance companies check your driving record?

I haven’t driven in a few years because I was in a city with excellent transportation. Now that I’ve moved to the suburbs, I need to get a car. I read that car insurance companies check your driving record to figure out how much to charge you. But how do they check my driving record?

Insurance companies don’t make money by taking gambles. Every car insurance company will check your
driving record
when pricing your policy. They do so by getting the information from the DMV or third-party providers.
In most cases, they’ll simply check your record through your state’s DMV or Secretary of State’s office. However, companies who want to accomplish the task faster will instead turn to third-party providers. One of the largest companies that have access to such information is LexisNexis.
Despite all insurers checking driving records, they also consider other factors when assessing your risk. And they weigh each of those factors differently. That’s why you’ll receive different quotes from different companies.
