How dangerous is race car driving?

I’m a girl who likes to drive fast. I love whipping my Mustang around town. I’ve considered changing careers and becoming a race car driver, but my husband is opposed—he says it’s too dangerous. How dangerous is race car driving?

Wow, you seem like an excellent person to grab a beer with. I like your style and your ambition, but your husband is right: race car driving is extremely dangerous. Race car drivers race at speeds over 200 miles per hour. If you do consider changing careers, you’ll benefit from knowing the risks of the profession.
Dangers of being a race car driver include:
  • Brain injury from crashing at high speeds into other drivers or fixed objects
  • Loss of limbs or eyes
  • Death—the fatality rate for race car driving is 3%!
That said, if you want to go live your dream—have at it! It’s just best to know the risks first. Until then, have fun whipping your
