How can you lose your driving privileges?

I had a really close call the other day and almost drifted into opposing traffic while I was checking my phone. Thankfully, the other driver honked their horn. It was a wake-up call; I realized I wasn’t really being serious about traffic laws and consequences and that I’d really hate it if I couldn’t drive. What could make me lose my driving privileges?

You made a serious mistake, but the best thing you can do is try to learn from it. You could lose your driving privileges if you commit a serious driving offense and have your
driver’s license suspended
. In some cases, a license suspension could be the penalty for non-driving-related offenses as well, so you should always check your state’s law.
The following driving offenses may result in a license suspension:
  • Speeding in excess of 50 mph over the posted speed limit
  • Driving while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs
  • Reckless driving
  • Racing
  • Failing to remain at the scene of an accident (also known as a hit-and-run)
  • Accumulating too many demerit points or incidents of lesser traffic violations
You could also be required to
reinstate your license
if you:
  • Ignore court summons for traffic citations
  • Ignore traffic tickets or court fees
  • Fail to pay child support
  • Drink while underage
  • Use a fake driver’s license
Your license could also be suspended if you don’t meet the minimum car insurance laws of your state. For help finding compliant and affordable coverage, try
