How can you install a fuel pressure regulator in a Honda?

I noticed black smoke coming from my engine on my drive home from work. That, along with the recent gas leak and the consistent misfiring, has led me to believe I have problems with the fuel pressure regulator. What’s the best way to install a new fuel pressure regulator in my Honda?

Fuel pressure regulators are vital car components, as they control gas flow in
your engine
. Unfortunately, they’re also a pain to change! While specific instructions vary between cars and models, here are some general steps for installing a fuel pressure regulator in your Honda.
Before you get started:
  • Park on a level surface.
  • Pull your parking brake.
  • Disconnect the wire from your negative battery terminal.
  • Let the engine cool.
  • Clean the fuel rail and surrounding area near the regulator.
Once you’ve done the prep work, follow these steps to install the regulator:
  • Attach the fuel pressure regulator to the fuel rail with two bolts and washers, one on either side.
  • Install an O-ring between the rail and regulator to ensure it doesn’t leak.
  • Tighten the regulator until it can sustain 9 pounds per foot of pressure.
  • Place the vacuum hose on top of the fuel pressure regulator.
  • Connect the fuel return line fitting to the remaining hole on your regulator.
  • Check to make sure the return line easily flows back to the main line and mend any bends or kinks in the line.
Remember, these steps are only intended to give you a general idea of how a fuel pressure regulator is installed. In reality, installing a regulator is a big job that requires a professional hand. It’s pretty affordable, at that—the total installation cost ranges from $150 to $300, including materials.
