How can you get a hardship license in California?

My brother recently got a DUI, and he lost his license. He’s really stressed about not being able to drive since he needs a car for work. We live in California—is he able to get a hardship license to drive?

You can get a hardship license in
California
after receiving your first
DUI
if you are 21 or over, your license or driving privileges aren’t revoked for other reasons, and you took a chemical test when requested at the time of your DUI.
Here’s how to apply for a hardship license in California:
  • Complete an application with the local DMV
  • Pay a $125 reissue fee
  • Provide proof of enrollment in a DUI school
  • Provide proof of financial responsibility with an
    SR-22 certificate
Remember that
car insurance is required
to legally drive in California. Drivers with a DUI on their record will likely be looking at higher insurance rates—but

a cheap policy with the coverage you need
