Installing a fiberglass hood on your car is a common modification to alter the appearance of your vehicle and drop some weight, but they are prone to spider cracks. Fortunately, spider cracks in a fiberglass hood aren’t difficult to repair, but it will require a fair amount of free time.
To fix spider cracks in a fiberglass hood, you will need:
  • Clean rags
  • Acetone
  • Sandpaper of varying grit
  • Masking tape
  • Plastic coverings
  • Gelcoat
  • Paintbrush
  • Polyvinyl alcohol
Once you have your supplies, you should:
  1. Clean the area using acetone and a clean rag.
  2. Roughen the surface using 100-grit sandpaper and wash again with acetone to remove particles from sanding.
  3. Protect the area surrounding the cracks using masking tape and plastic.
  4. Prepare your gelcoat using the included instructions. Then apply a thin layer to the affected area using a paintbrush.
  5. Allow the gelcoat to rest for three hours and then spray lightly with polyvinyl alcohol to help the curing process.
  6. Let the gelcoat cure for 24 hours and then wash the area with soapy water.
  7. Smooth the surface starting with 300-grit sandpaper, then 600-grit, then 900-grit until you reach your desired finish.
  8. Clean the area with acetone and paint the area if necessary.
