How can you check car insurance history?

I haven't had insurance for three months, but I'm going to start driving again. My new insurance company wants to know what companies I was with previously. How can I check my previous car insurance history?

Car insurance
companies frequently ask new customers about past insurers, but thankfully, the information is fairly easy to find.
To start, try to remember all your past insurers. If you’ve only had one or two, this task is easy. If you’ve had many over the past few years, you may have more difficulty.
If this is the case, you have a few options:
  • Check your car. Most people keep
    proof of insurance
in their glove box. Most people also don’t clean out their gloveboxes often, so you may find old insurance cards floating around. They should list all the information you need to pass along to your new company.
  • Check your email. Paperless documents are extremely common these days, so you likely received emails from past insurers. You can search your email for keywords like car insurance, insurance, and insurance policies to see what comes up.
  • Check with the DMV. Almost every state requires insurance, so insurance companies send your insurance information to the DMV. They may be able to provide you with your past information.
  • Ask your new insurer to pull a CLUE report. When switching to a new insurance company, there are several reports pulled to determine your rate. A CLUE report, or Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange, details any past claims along with prior insurance information.
If you can’t find any prior insurance information or nothing is coming up in your CLUE report, you may see an increase in your car insurance rate. If this happens, don’t fret!
Your rate will begin to decrease as you stay continually insured. You also have the option of shopping around. Before agreeing to a new policy, check with other providers. Rates vary, so you could find a better rate elsewhere.
