How can static electricity be used for painting cars?

At the repair shop the other day, one of the technicians mentioned something to another customer about static electricity being used to paint cars. What kind of a process is this? Is that even a thing?

Static electric painting is a highly effective way of ensuring that a vehicle’s
paint job
turns out as close to perfect as possible. When a technician is using static electricity to paint a car, a negative charge is applied to the car’s surface using an electrode, which looks a lot like a battery cable. The paint is then positively charged while in the paint reservoir, and then is sprayed using a paint gun onto the surface of the car.
The paint particles are then statically attracted to the surface of the vehicle, ensuring that every inch gets an even coat of paint. It’s also a highly efficient method of painting. Because of the attraction between the paint particles and the car’s metal surface, there’s little to no overspray that occurs. Though the static electric painting was once limited to carmakers’ manufacturing plants, aftermarket specialists and shops like
Maaco
are able to use this method of painting to ensure customers get a fresh, glossy coat every time.
