How can I sell a car in New York?

My husband and I are moving to California in a few months and are only planning to bring one of our cars. To avoid the hassle of having the other car shipped across the country, we want to sell it. How can I sell a car in New York?

Answer
In order to sell a car in New York State, there are a few steps you have to take as a private seller.
Once you have a buyer lined up and you are ready to make the sale, you should:
  • allow the buyer to have the car inspected by a third party.
  • gather and organize all documentation and service records you have for the vehicle.
  • be able to provide mileage and condition of the vehicle (and complete the odometer disclosure statement on the back of the title certificate if the vehicle is 10 years old or newer).
  • complete and sign the transfer of ownership section of the title certificate.
  • sign a bill of sale that includes the vehicle’s year and make, VIN, date of sale, and purchase price or use form MV-912.
  • complete a statement of transaction (form DTF-802).
  • remove and surrender your license plates to the DMV.
  • remove the car from your car insurance policy.
Finally, don’t forget to let your car insurance company know you are moving! Once out there, you should shop around for a new car insurance policy to make sure you are not overpaying. Consider using Jerry to purchase your policy and compare quotes from up to 50+ insurance companies, including Nationwide and Allstate. The average Jerry driver saves $879 a year on car insurance!
Don’t forget, since your car will still have New York license plates, you will need to mail them back to the state after your California coverage starts. Complete the Plate surrender application that can be printed from New York’s DMV website and mail the plates to: NYS DMV 6 Empire State Plaza Room B240 Albany, NY 12228
Wait until you have the plate surrender receipt from the DMV before you cancel the New York insurance. This way, you can avoid any possible fines or penalties. Good luck with your move!
