How can I scrap a car without a title?

I have this old junker car that’s been sitting in my garage forever. I want to scrap it for a few bucks, but I lost the title. Will a junkyard take a car without a title?

In most states, you can scrap a car without a title as long as you can prove that you are the owner.
Typically, you can do this by providing the scrap yard with your vehicle registration driver’s license.
Note that the following things will not count as proof of ownership:
  • A bill of sale—those can easily be forged
  • Proof of insurance
—it is possible to insure a vehicle that isn’t yours to sell
  • Cash and bribery—the yard is required to report every car they acquire
If you’ve lost your vehicle registration, you’ll need to visit your local DMV to replace those documents before you try to scrap the car.
