How can I replace the battery of my BMW 5 key fob?

I’ve had my BMW 5 Series for a while now, and just yesterday, the key fob stopped working. I’m assuming the battery is dead, but I don’t see a clear way to fix it. How can I replace the battery in my BMW?

A dead key fob can be really inconvenient! Luckily your car will still start even with a dead key—but you won’t be able to lock or unlock the vehicle remotely. To replace the battery of your BMW 5, you will need to:
  • Hold the button at the base of the fob and slide out the internal key blade.
  • Find the small hole around the edge of the fob and use it to take off the backplate.
  • Switch out the battery (either CR2450 or CR2032) for a new one. Your manual will tell you which battery your fob has.
  • Clip the backplate into place and return the internal key blade.
Some BMW key fobs have rechargeable batteries. If this is the case with yours, all you need to do is put the key in the ignition, and the battery will charge while you drive. However, these batteries can degrade over time, and unfortunately, you will have to purchase a new key if that happens. A new key can cost around $300 and will require you to show proof of ownership at the time of purchase. However,if your key is lost or damaged due to theft, vandalism, fire, hail, or flood your replacement may be covered under the
