How can I replace my car door lock cylinder?

Someone broke into my car last night and somehow damaged the lock cylinder on my door. Now my key won’t even go into the lock. How can I replace the lock cylinder?

I’m so sorry to hear that happened to you! I hope you’re doing okay and nothing too important has gone missing.
Because this damage is the result of theft, your car insurance may be able to help you get your lock fixed if you have
comprehensive coverage
on your policy. Comprehensive coverage works to protect your car from damages outside of your control that weren’t caused by a collision.
The first thing you’ll want to do if your car has been broken into is take pictures of the scene and file a police report. Note that your insurance company will usually require a police report if you decide to file a claim for the break-in. Do not move the vehicle until the officer arrives.
When you file the report, be sure to have the following information on hand:
  • Your driver’s license
  • Vehicle registration
  • Car insurance ID card
  • Photos of the damage
  • List of stolen items
If anything among the stolen items is financially compromising, place a fraud alert on your credit record and call your banks to freeze your accounts.
Since there is damage to your vehicle, it may be a good idea to file a claim. While your insurance cannot cover the items stolen from the vehicle (
renters
or homeowner’s insurance would help with this), it can cover damage resulting from a break-in—so long as your policy includes comprehensive coverage.
