How can I remove a car from my GEICO policy?

My future ex-husband and I share an insurance policy in New York. He took the car and moved out. He has been saying he would get insurance on it but he never did. I can't keep paying for his car so I would like to remove it from the GEICO policy.

“No one wants to pay for an ex’s car ,and luckily, with
GEICO
, you might not have to.
First off, who’s name is the car titled and registered to? If you are the registered owner of the car, do not remove it from the policy.
If you remove the car from the policy and the license plates haven’t been surrendered to the DMV, New York will fine you $8 per day until they have the plates or you put the car back on insurance. Those fees add up fast and your license would be in jeopardy.
In that situation, contact your divorce lawyer for advice on what to do.
If the car is registered under your ex-husband’s name, that is a different story.
Call GEICO and explain that you are separated and you need him and the car removed from the policy. The agent will then do what they call a div/sep.
A div/sep means you would keep the existing policy and they would start a new policy for your ex and his car under a new policy number. It is helpful if you know his new address so GEICO can contact him with his new bill.
If he chooses not to pay the bill and the policy cancels, it will not impact your driver’s license or insurance policy.
Anytime you are going through big life changes is a good time to re-evaluate your insurance needs. This is the perfect time to shop for a
