How can I relieve back pain while driving?
I commute over an hour each way on my drive to work and I’ve noticed over the past few months that my back pain has been getting worse. It’s uncomfortable and I can’t seem to sit still behind the wheel. Is there anything I can do to provide relief while I’m driving?

I feel your pain—driving for long periods can be hard on the back! Sitting in the same position for extended periods can trigger back pain, even if you don’t normally have it. To relieve back pain while driving, try adjusting your seat position or using lumbar support.
If you’re stuck dealing with a back that doesn’t want to cooperate, here are some tips that could help:
- Use lumbar support—Whether it’s a cushion or a rolled-up towel, place it at the low back around belt height to support the natural curvature of your spine.
- Inch your seat forward—Get as close to the wheel as you can while still maintaining comfort. This prevents you from slouching as well as keeps you from straining to hit the pedals.
- Angle your seat properly—Your seat should be about 100-110 degrees for an optimal seated position.
- Don’t forget to stretch—If you’re driving long distances and able to take breaks, stretch! It keeps the blood flowing and prevents stiffness.
- Put the heat on—If you’re lucky enough to have heated seats, they can be great for providing relief from back pain by relaxing tight muscles, reducing pain signal transmission to the brain, and increasing blood flow to the painful area.
- Change your grip—Your grip on the steering wheel can contribute to pain. The best position for your hands is at 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock because it allows you to rest your elbows and alleviate pain, especially in the upper back.
