How can I reduce my car insurance costs?
I was laid off early in the pandemic and am still unemployed. I need to keep car insurance on my vehicle in order to legally drive, obviously, but I can't afford my premium as it is. Is there a way to lower the cost?
“The past year has definitely been hard, so it’s understandable you want to save money where you can. I’m happy to say that there are several things you can do to save money on your car insurance!
First, you should reach out to your car insurance company to see if you’re eligible for any discounts. You might qualify for some, like:
- Low mileage discounts. Since the pandemic started, many companies are offering lower rates and discounts on their policies. If you aren’t driving your vehicle as much, you may qualify for this discount.
- Enrolling in a driving behavior program. The driving behavior program will look at how you drive, the frequency, and the distance to determine a discount. Some companies offer up to a 20% discount on policies for good drivers.
- Re-examine the coverages on your policy. If you aren’t driving as frequently, you may be able to reduce your coverage limits. Lowering your liability insurance limits or removing optional coverages like rental car or towing can reduce the cost of your insurance.
If none of these is an option for you, shop around! You may be able to find a lower rate with another company for the coverage you require. You can request car insurance quotes online to determine if there’s a better rate available for you.
If you want to compare quotes without the frustration, try using the Jerry app. Jerry will gather affordable quotes from 50 different providers, help you switch plans, and will even help you cancel your old policy.
I hope your financial situation improves!”

Does car insurance cover my tires if I run over a nail?
I ran over a nail while driving and got a flat tire. I used my insurance for roadside assistance, but can I also use it for the tire damage? I don't really want to pay for damage that wasn't my fault.
