How can I prevent my car battery from being stolen?

Is there a way I can prevent my car battery from being stolen? Two of my neighbors have told me that someone stole their car batteries recently, and mine is brand new. I don’t want to have to worry about it getting taken.

I don’t blame you one bit! When a car battery is stolen, the thief knows you will need to replace it, so it is common for the replacement battery to be stolen as well.
To prevent your car battery from being stolen:
  • Park your car in the garage or in a well-lit area.
  • Buy a hood alarm.
  • Talk to your neighbors about a neighborhood watch program.
  • Invest in a hood lock.
Car batteries have about 21 pounds of lead, so people can make about $7 per battery when they are sold to scrap yards. There are some unscrupulous people out there that will steal as many as they can get their hands on for a quick buck.
If your battery gets stolen, theft and vandalism are covered perils on your car insurance policy. If the cost of the battery is more than your
comprehensive deductible
, contact your insurance provider to make a claim.
If you don’t have comprehensive coverage on your insurance policy, try downloading the
