How can I prevent getting vertigo while driving?

Recently I was driving down the road when I randomly got so dizzy that I had to pull over. This incident left me feeling pretty anxious about driving. Are there any ways to prevent vertigo when driving?

How scary! We’re so sorry to hear that you had this experience. Anything that makes us anxious or unable to drive safely is a big deal. Fortunately, struggling with vertigo does not mean you have to give up driving.
If you experience vertigo primarily when driving, there might be a few common causes, including:
  • Motion sickness You could be at a higher risk for motion sickness due to the following: age, pregnancy, certain medications (like NSAIDs, antibiotics, or birth control pills),sinus infection, ear infection, or concussion.
  • Vision issues Binocular vision dysfunction and vertical heterophoria are also common causes of driving vertigo. Caused by straining eye muscles or slight misalignments of your eyes, each can lead to extreme vertigo while driving as well as major driving anxiety. Be sure to see an eye doctor if this sounds like you!
Here are a few tips to help with driving motion sickness:
  • Take a non-drowsy motion sickness medication an hour or two before driving.
  • Avoid greasy, spicy, and heavy foods before hitting the road.
  • Keep the A/C on to keep yourself cool, or roll down a window for some fresh air.
  • Give yourself breaks when necessary.
  • Focus on a point in the distance and avoid looking side to side.
If you have vertigo in situations other than just driving, it could be due to inner ear problems, like benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), or migraines. In these cases, it’s best to see a doctor for treatment.
To keep yourself protected on the road, you’ll also want to make sure you have excellent
