How can I open my frozen car door?

What’s the best way to open a frozen car door in the middle of winter? My car keeps freezing over, and it’s been making me late to work! I’d like an easy method for quickly opening the door.

Frozen cars can be frustrating—especially when they get in the way of your daily routine. Luckily, you’re not alone! Here are some of the most common ways you can open a frozen car door:
  • Push your car door. Leaning against the door or applying pressure to it is often enough to shatter a sheet of ice. While it won’t always work, it’s a good first step!
  • Scrape off the ice. Use a scraper or chisel to pick off any thick areas of ice that get in your way.
  • Run water over the seals. Running water is warmer than the ice, so even using your hose to spray your door can help it thaw faster.
  • Use commercial de-icer. There are plenty of professional de-icers out there that can help you melt the ice in a hurry. Just spray it on, and watch the ice melt.
  • Heat your key. If you heat a metal key before inserting it into the lock, you can help the ice in the mechanism melt faster. While this won’t always be reliable, it’s a great last resort.
When it comes to
dealing with frozen doors
, the best steps you can take are preventative. If you park outside, keep your car covered so moisture doesn’t collect in your doors. If possible, park inside! If you can’t take any preventative measures, use the tips above to melt the ice in a hurry.
