How can I open a car door without the handle?

Is it possible to open a door without a handle? I have a 2000 Acura Integra. The backseat door on the driver’s side will not open from the inside or the outside. How can I fix this?

This sounds like a tricky situation—but don’t worry, there is a solution! To open a car door without the handle, you will need the following:
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers
Here’s what to do: Step one: Turn on your vehicle. Roll the backseat window down on the driver’s side.
Step two: Locate the interior door handle assembly. Next, find the screw inside the door handle. Use a screwdriver to take the screw out.
Step three: Slide the interior door handle toward the front of the car. It should pop out.
Step four: You should see a rod inside the door panel that is connected to a latch on the door handle assembly. Take the screwdriver and move the latch away from the rod to unclip it. The rod should slide out and face down.
Step five: Take pliers and clamp the rod. Pull hard toward the front of the car. The door should open.
The next step is to replace the exterior door handle. If you do not have the experience or knowledge, this can be very challenging to do. It’s best to take your car to a professional and they can repair the faulty door for you.
