How can I keep slugs out of the garden?

I’ve noticed some of my plants have chew marks, but I can’t figure out what’s eating them. Except I was checking out my plants the other day and found a slug—I think it’s the culprit! How do I get rid of them?

Slugs are nasty little creatures that can do a lot of damage to gardens! If you want to get rid of slugs, use slug-resistant plants, remove their shelter, create a prickly barrier, or lay down copper tape.
Here’s why you should use these methods:
  • Plant slug-resistant plants: A gentle method to keep slugs away, use plants that act as natural pesticides. Astrantia produces a scent that repels slugs, as do wormwood, rue, fennel, anise, and rosemary.
  • Remove shelter: Slugs seek shelter under bricks, furniture, and large logs. Remove any potential places they can hide, making your garden an unsuitable habitat for them to live in. Also, encourage natural predators like toads, newts, hedgehogs, and song thrushes.
  • Make a prickly barrier: Slugs are soft-bodied mollusks, and having plants or objects with sharp leaves can help deter them from eating your plants. Eggshells, pine needles, and sharp sand are all effective.
  • Use copper tape: Copper reacts with the slime on slugs. Every time the slug comes in contact with the copper, it gives them tiny electric shocks, which deters them from reaching your plants. Attach the tape to potted plants, raised beds, or anywhere else that needs protecting.
