How can I keep my windshield from freezing while I’m driving?

I recently moved to New York from California, so it’s safe to say that I’ve never faced a winter quite like this one. My windshield fogs up every time I start my car, which is a real pain when I have to drive to work every morning! How do I keep ice from forming on my windshield while driving?

Few things are more frustrating (or unsafe!) than driving with an icy windshield.
Here are some tips for keeping your windshield from freezing while driving—so you can spend more time enjoying the winter wonderland and less time worrying about getting to work on time:
  • Set your defrost to high: When you start your car, you’ll want to turn your defrost to the highest setting. The longer you have the defrost running, the better—so if you’re able to, pop outside and crank the defrost up a few minutes before you leave. Your windshield will start to warm up and the ice and fog will fade away.
  • Clear ice from your windshield
: If you just can’t wait or if the layer of ice on your windshield is thick, use a plastic scraper to clear the ice. Make sure to clear as much of the windshield as possible—the more ice you scrape off, the warmer the glass will be, so it won’t fog up or ice over again.
  • Use de-icing windshield wiper fluid: Before winter starts, you can batten down your (metaphorical) hatches by purchasing deicing wiper fluid. That stuff is no joke—it’ll help to clear your windshield at temperatures that are well below freezing.
  • Pull over to a safe location: Finally, if you still can’t see out of your windshield, it’s best to pull over to a safe place on the side of the road. Keep your car running and make sure your defrost is turned all the way to the hot setting—then wait it out. Your windshield should clear within a few minutes.
