How can I keep chipmunks out of the garden?
My daughter has been feeding a few chipmunks that visit our house, but I’ve noticed that recently they’ve been chewing up my plants! How do I keep them out of my gardens?

At first glance, chipmunks probably don’t seem like a garden’s worst nightmare—but they can do some damage! Chipmunks are small and nimble, which means they can get into smaller spaces that other garden pests can’t. Plus, they dig. The best way to keep your garden safe from chipmunks is to add fencing, use spices, trap them, or bring in predators.
Here’s more about the solutions:
- Add fencing: Since chipmunks are tiny and great climbers—and even better diggers—fences aren’t always effective at keeping them out. A fence with small holes buried at least 6” in the ground can help to deter them. If you add netting over the top and sides, it provides an additional obstacle for small critters.
- Use spices: Garden critters don’t like spice—use it to your advantage. Sprinkle some cayenne pepper, chili powder, or other hot spices to keep them away. It’s a great non-toxic way to discourage chipmunks from hanging around.
- Humanely trap them: Live traps are a great way to keep chipmunks out of the area if you’re only dealing with a few. Release them away from your house to a more suitable location.
- Bring in predators: You’d be surprised how effective “decoy predators” are at keeping small animals away from gardens. Invest in a motion-detected owl that can scare chipmunks away from your garden. Products made from the urine of predator animals are also available at garden stores.
