How can I keep birds out of the garden?
I’ve just planted all my vegetables in the garden, and every time I look out the window, birds are digging through it! How do I get rid of them?

Trying to keep pests out of your garden is a huge challenge, but if you want to keep birds away, the best solution is to use netting or fence the area off.
Here’s what you can do to protect your garden from birds:
- Use netting: Creating physical barriers is one of the most effective methods of keeping birds out of your garden. Butterfly netting is some of the best you can get that keeps birds out while still allowing beneficial insects to reach your garden to pollinate. To avoid injury to wildlife, use netting with holes smaller than 1 cm.
- Defend plants with garden fleece: Garden fleece is usually used to protect plants from frost, but it’s also great for smaller crops year-round. It can go over leafy greens to keep birds from chowing down. But don’t forget to weigh the sides down with rocks and roll the fleece back when it’s harvest time.
- Buy a scarecrow: While you may think they’re silly, scarecrows work—as long as they’re moved frequently. Changing the outfit will help, too.
- Hang wind chimes: Sudden sounds or movements deter birds. If you hang wind chimes, you’ll not only scare off the birds, but you get to listen to their beautiful sounds. But make sure they’re in your garden—they won’t do much from your porch.
- Place reflective items: Like sounds, reflective objects can scare birds away. Old CDs or mirrors will catch the light and scare away birds. Tie some old CDs together and hang them from nearby trees to send light rays in all directions.
