How can I get the gross new car smell out of my car?
What is the fastest way to get that new car smell out of my car? I am picking up my new car in a few days and I absolutely hate that smell. It makes me feel sick, and I am dreading riding around in it. Is there a way to get rid of it quickly?

That’s a great question. Believe it or not, that new car smell is actually filled with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and is bad for your health! Some people, and you may be one of them, are more sensitive to these toxins. We don’t want the new car smell to ruin that happy new car feeling you may have! So here are some things you can do that may help.
Since you haven’t picked up your car yet, contact the dealer and let him know of your concern. One of the best things you can do is have the car cleaned and the seats and floor shampooed. Ask your dealer to throw in a free detail job before you pick the car up.
If you can’t get one for free, get one immediately on the way home from the dealership. Many detailers and car washes offer a free wash and touch-up within the seven days of the original cleaning, so make sure to take advantage of that!
This should take care of the bulk of the odor within the first month of owning the car, but the toxins will remain for the first six months. To expedite the removal, here are a few more tips that will help in the meantime:
- Drive with your windows down whenever you can.
- Bake out the car by parking it in a safe spot and leaving the doors and trunk open on warm days
- Use an air purifier
- Leave a small container of baking soda in the car to absorb toxins and odors
