How can I get really cheap car insurance for young drivers?
My daughter is getting her first car in two weeks, and I know that putting her on our policy is the cheapest way to go, but she is insisting on getting her own policy! I’ve tried to tell her how expensive it is for an 18-year-old to be insured, but she’s set on doing this herself. I want to help her save money on whatever policy she does end up with, though—so is there any way to get cheap insurance for a young driver?

You’re absolutely right: insuring your daughter on your policy is the cheapest way to do it, but since she is insisting, there are a couple of different ways to get really cheap car insurance for young drivers. Here are a few of them:
- Consider the state you live in. The average cost ofinsurance for teensvaries greatly between states, and could range from $3,000 to $13,000 a year for full coverage. It’s a good idea to check out how much insurance costs in your state so that your daughter can get a better sense of what to expect. (And who knows—seeing how pricey car insurance can get might make her reconsider your policy, too!)
- Look for discounts. While teenage car insurance can be expensive, your daughter may be eligible for discounts. If she’s keeping up her grades, she can ask around about agood student discount, while taking adriver training coursecould net her a discount of eight to 10 percent. And if she’s going away to college soon, she might find that she’s eligible for astudent away at school discount, too. Once she’s landed on an insurance company, make sure to ask about any discounts she might be eligible for, since this can make a big difference in price.
